Church of Maria SS. Assunta - Alcara li Fusi

The Mother Church of Maria SS. Assunta is the main building of Alcara. Its construction dates back to the Byzantine era, but there are numerous alterations that over the centuries have shaped and diversified it. The exterior of the building is characterized by the salient facade that frames a superb Renaissance-style portal. Going around, it is possible to admire the mighty crenellated bell tower with a soaring spire, the dome and the three rear apses. The interior, with a cross Latin cross, with three naves with two side chapels, preserves valuable paintings and sculptures. The most sacred place for the veneration of the faithful is the armored sacellum where the body of San Nicolò Politi, patron of Alcara and the sixteenth-century statue are kept. Before arriving there is the dedicated chapel, finely decorated in stucco, on which stands the canvas by Filippo Tancredi depicting the discovery of the body of the Saint.
