Minor Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta - Montalbano Elicona

Facing the square, there is the Minor Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta and San Nicolò Vescovo. It is the largest of the churches in the city and is the result of numerous reconstructions and extensions that have taken place over the centuries. The original structure, in fact, dates back to the IX-X century, while the bell tower and the two lateral naves were added in later moments. You will find the very particular trussed roof of particular architectural interest, while among other elements worthy of attention, the rose windows that enliven the facade and the walls enriched with friezes and rich decorations. Inside, you can admire the marble statue of San Nicolò, the work of the sculptor Giacomo Gagini; you will certainly be fascinated by its raised base which shows the life of the saint. There is also a wooden crucifix from the 15th century and the representation of the Last Supper, by the artist Guido Reni. The reconstructions of which the Basilica was the object have given life today to a building with exclusive features whose originality is enhanced by the evocative staircase it overlooks.
