Church of San Michele Arcangelo - Montalbano Elicona

Built in the 13th century, the Church of San Michele Arcangelo is the first to have been built outside the fortified walls of Montalbano.

Until 1740 a building for the Retreat of Priests was annexed to it and in 1878 it became Campo Santo Provvisorio. At the end of the 19th century it became the seat of the Confranternita of the Blessed Sacrament. After the 1908 earthquake it was left to decay until, in 2006, it was completely restored.

The interior of the Church has a single nave and close to the presbytery, the space reserved for the clergy, there is a wall on which a 17th century portal opens. Under the floor of the altar you can see a crypt used as an ossuary, while above there is a large niche with a rectangular section.
