The megaliths of Argimusco

South of Montalbano Elicona there is another extremely fascinating and mysterious place: it is the Megaliths of Argimusco. We are in one of the richest areas of Sicily for the presence of countless megalithic structures. They arise in the silence of the countryside and consist of a series of high rocks carved and modeled to take on zoomorphic and anthropomorphic forms with great symbolic, spiritual and scientific value. The origin of these large quartz sandstone rocks is highly debated. The Megaliths of Argimusco, according to some studies, would be the testimony in Sicily of millenary civilizations whose echo has come down to our days. According to other theories, however, they would simply be the result of wind erosion and natural modeling that took place over millennia. However, their structure, their strategic position, their use, their highly symbolic value and the magic-religious rites of which they have been and continue to be the object, seem to give credit to the hypotheses that consider them artifacts with functions of a type not only astronomical, but also religious: astronomical, because they are used to determine the solstices, the equinoxes, the moon phases and the alternation of the seasons; religious, because they would delimit a sacred area for the celebration of the ancient Cult of the Sun, typical of ancient megalithic civilizations. So if you like adventures in search of ancient mysteries, this is your chance. All the hypotheses, researches and studies carried out on this sacred place make the Montalbano site rightfully part of the map of the European megaliths, so much so that it is worthy of the name of Italian Stonehenge. Among the various forms taken by the megaliths, you will be able to recognize the Eagle, the Prayer, the Great Skull, the two Menhirs of fertility, male and female, each with a precise symbolic meaning. And whether it is the work of Nature or of man, this place preserves intact a charm, a mystery and a mystical value to which it is difficult to remain indifferent.
